RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Football is back at Carter-Finley Stadium, but before making it to the game, there are several construction zones drivers have to pass through.
NC State University’s athletic department is warning drivers to expect it to take longer to leave a game than previous years due to construction detours.
Work to improve traffic flow continues along I-440 between Walnut Street in Cary and Wade Avenue in Raleigh. Blue Ridge Road is also still closed at Hillsborough Street as crews work on building an underpass, something NCDOT spokesperson Aaron Moody said was supposed to be finished in 2023.
“This is a large, complex project with a lot of moving parts,” Moody said. “It involves frequent traffic shifts that allow us to maintain the existing four lanes of traffic throughout the work zone, minimizing traffic disruption. We’re working with the contractor to finish the project as soon as possible.”
Briand Dodd did have to change his route a little heading to the game, but said he didn’t have any delays. “The fantastic North Carolina Highway Patrol did a great job of getting us in here, and getting us in here quick,” Dodd said. “Trinity had hardly any traffic whatsoever.”
Moody said crews are pausing construction near the stadium hours before and after the game to help with the traffic flow.
As for when construction will wrap up, Moody said NCDOT said the work on I-440 and at Blue Ridge Road and Hillsborough Street should be complete in 2025.
