It seems that UNC is actually going to take the plunge with Bill Belichick—Inside Carolina is reporting that a deal between the two is nearly finalized. Belichick is 72 years old, has never coached at the college level, and may bring with him a requirement that one of his sons be named head coach in waiting. But other than that!
It’s possible that this move works out well for the Tar Heels, and also possible that it’s a complete disaster. Probably not a Herm-Edwards-at-Arizona-State level of disaster (Belichick is obviously a much better coach), but I don’t think you can rule that out. Regardless, it will no doubt be very expensive.
I’m fascinated to see the financial terms and various other agreements that are involved with this deal. How much UNC is bending over backward to try and make this look like an easy fit will be interesting.
I lean toward this whole thing being a disaster, and I wonder how much patience Belichick will have once he’s actually in the thick of a college program and surrounded by concerns like NCAA compliance, class attendance, and what have you. Seems we’re gonna find out.
