NC State defensive coordinator Tony Gibson quickly became a top target at Charlotte this week and reportedly the job was his if he wanted it, but he has declined that opportunity.
That’s encouraging news for NC State, and Gibson can afford to be picky—Charlotte is still a relatively young FBS program, and has only one winning season since joining college football’s top tier in 2015. It’s a tough gig.
Gibson’s decision to turn down Charlotte might also mean that better opportunities are in play for him. Both West Virginia and Marshall have vacancies, and Gibson of course has extensive ties to that state, and was the DC at WVU before coming to Raleigh. In North Carolina, App State—a far better job than Charlotte—is also available, though it doesn’t sound like Gibson has been in the mix there.
A lot can change quickly with these things, and it’ll bear watching how the West Virginia and Marshall searches develop.
