State’s gonna need a new defensive coordinator.
It looks like Tony Gibson had a good reason to turn down the Charlotte opening. Per FootballScoop, Gibson is set to return to his home state as the new head coach at Marshall. The Thundering Herd won the Sun Belt title today.
And that’s the odd bit about the coaching change at Marshall: the Herd won 10 games this year. No idea what’s going on there. But anyway, the unusual situation means that Gibson will be walking into a pretty good program, rather than a complete rebuild. Can’t ask for a lot more from your first head coaching gig.
It was only a matter of time that Gibson would find the right opportunity elsewhere. He’s been paying his dues as an FBS assistant coach for more than two decades and has earned plenty of deserved recognition for the defenses he’s built at NC State. I hate to see him go, but I’m happy he’s finally getting the chance to run his own program.
Now Dave’s got a pretty big hire to make.
