Today the ACC welcomed SMU, Stanford, and Cal into the fold. SMU is officially a league member as of July 1, while the other two will be completely on board on Aug. 2. Was adding these schools a good idea? No, probably not. Will it make a concrete difference to the league’s future? No, probably not.
But do we have new sports friends? We sure do! You can’t put a price on that.
Sure, Cal and Stanford’s revenue sports have been moribund lately, which is partly why they were left behind in the last round of expansion, but that’ll probably change eventually. (Cal basketball might be hopeless, though.) And they’ve given us some fun new places to explore as fans, which is the primary silver lining I’m going to take from the whole deal.
What SMU lacks in accomplishment or merit it more than makes up for with more oil money than god. (God: the original Oil Man.) The Mustangs are bringing the best football program of the bunch, so at in that respect, they’re a proper addition. And if we’re nice maybe they’ll let us have some of that oil money.
As a form of welcome, here are the new ACC members as Simpsons characters:
California: Ned Flanders’ beatnik parents
SMU: Crazy Texas businessman
Stanford: Homer Simpson as John Elway
