Series-deciding Game 3 will be Monday at a time TBD
Not really a lot to say about this one. Dom Fritton didn’t have his stuff today and got lit up, NC State ran themselves out of an early opportunity to put runs on the board, and the bats generally failed to show up in an 11-2 loss to Georgia in Game 2 of the 2024 Athens Super Regional.
Fritton got touched up for 7 runs (all earned) on 7 hits and a walk in just 3.0 innings of work while striking out 2. Ryan Marohn followed with 4.0 innings of 4 run (all earned) ball on 6 hits and 2 walks with 2 strikeouts. Hollis Fanning and Carson Kelly combined to pitch the final two frames of the game without allowing a run.
The Wolfpack put runners on the bases with a decent amount of regularity in the game (9 hits, 3 walks), but never came up with the big hit. Jacob Cozart (2-for-3, HR, R, RBI, BB) and Brandon Butterworth (2-for-4) had multi-hit efforts while Garrett Pennington (1-for-3, BB) and Luke Nixon (1-for-3, R, BB) also reached base safely multiple times.
About the only positive in the game is that by being so lopsided so early, NC State did not use any of their key three relievers (Jacob Dudan, Derrick Smith, Cooper Consiglio), so they should have their full complement of top bullpen options to follow presumed Monday starter Logan Whitaker in the series finale.
The decisive Game 3 on Monday does not yet have a stated start time or broadcast channel, but will be aired on the ESPN Network.
