The utility man adds another piece to the 2025 Pack roster
NC State continues to add to the 2025 roster with yet another SEC transfer, this time from Trenton Lyons of Ole Miss. The 6’3, 185 pound utility player will be a sophomore in the coming season with three years of eligibility remaining.
Lyons appeared in 21 games for the Rebels in 2024 while making 7 starts. He hit .256/.326/.282, 9.3 BB%, 37.2 K%, 1-1 SB. While primarily playing catcher, he threw out 2-of-14 (14.3%) opposing base runners. I wouldn’t expect that he’ll remain behind the dish with the Wolfpack.
This summer with the Holly Springs Salamanders, Lyons is primarily playing shortstop while also getting a little run at catcher and third base. His athleticism and defensive abilities give him an opportunity to play most anywhere on the diamond. With the Salamanders – where he is teammates with 2024 Wolfpackers Jake Bechtel, Rob Nedry (Nedry is currently in the portal, though), and Hollis Fanning – Lyons is hitting .293/.391/.414, 7.0 BB%, 13.0 K%, 17-18 SB.
From D1 Baseball’s report on Ole Miss last fall:
If it can be done on a baseball field, chances are Trenton Lyons is good at it, and as a result, he looks the part of a potential Swiss Army knife for Ole Miss in 2024 and beyond. He’s a plus runner who turns in 6.6-second sixty-yard-dash times, he’s an excellent athlete and he’s a physical presence at 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds. He caught in high school and he’s a good defender back there, but he also has history playing shortstop and the Ole Miss coaching staff thinks he could even end up in a corner outfield spot. His upside is high to begin with, but if he proves he can hit SEC pitching, he has a chance to be special.
Coming out of Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, the switch-hitting Lyons was rated as the #205 player the class of 2023.
