NC State and Florida State ended up playing just two games this weekend, as the Saturday night contest was canceled because of weather. After the Wolfpack took the series-opener on Friday night, the Seminoles got even with an 8-1 victory on Sunday.
Dominic Fritton got the start and his struggles continued—he gave up two home runs in this one, and is now up to 12 home runs allowed in ACC games, in 34-1/3 innings of work. His ERA is north of eight.
FSU scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take control out of the gate and then used stellar defense to make sure the Wolfpack did not rally. The Noles’ outfield made not one but two diving two-out catches with multiple Wolfpack runners on base, keeping at least three runs off the scoreboard in the process. This grab in the sixth with the bases loaded and the score 5-1, with the heart of the Pack’s order looming, was pretty big for FSU.
But the Seminoles escaped damage there, then scored three runs in the bottom of the frame to put the game on ice. So it goes sometimes.
On the bright side, Logan Whitaker returned to the mound, making his first appearance since late March. The team also clinched a berth in the ACC tournament over the weekend, so that’s nice. Eight of tournament slots have been locked up.
