RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – With the first week of the college football season now in the books, one team in North Carolina remains the state’s sole representative in the Top 25 rankings.
The North Carolina State football team appeared in the No. 23 spot in the latest USA Today Coaches Poll released Tuesday, dropping one spot from the initial preseason rankings. Meanwhile, the Wolfpack stayed put at No. 24 in the Associated Press Top 25 rankings.
This comes after the Wolfpack took care of business in their season opener on Thursday night, scoring 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to pull out the 38-21 win over Western Carolina.
Three Atlantic Coast Conference teams joined N.C. State in this week’s coaches poll, along with Miami at No. 15, Clemson at No. 22 and Louisville making its poll debut at the No. 24 spot.
The other ACC programs that received votes include Georgia Tech, SMU, Boston College, North Carolina and Syracuse. The Yellow Jackets also made an appearance at No. 23 in the AP rankings.
One notable absence in both polls is preseason No. 10-ranked Florida State, which lost its first two games to open the 2024 season.
Tennessee came in at the No. 12 ranking in the coaches poll, officially setting up a Top 25 showdown between the Wolfpack and the Volunteers at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte on Saturday night. The Volunteers are ranked No. 14 in the AP poll.
Just slight changes among the top five teams as both Texas and Alabama rose one spot in the rankings, appearing at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Meanwhile, Ole Miss jumped to the No. 5 spot. Both Georgia and Ohio State kept their positions at No. 1 and No. 2.
The only difference in the AP poll is that Notre Dame rounded out the top five, swapping with Ole Miss.
