RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Though all three Triangle Atlantic Coast Conference women’s basketball teams are still ranked in the latest AP poll, two of them dropped some spots after weekend losses to other top 25 squads.
NC State had the biggest challenge of the young season so far, as they faced reigning national champions No. 1 South Carolina in Charlotte in a rematch of one of last season’s Final Four games. After losing to the Gamecocks 71-57 on Sunday, the Wolfpack dropped four spots to No. 13.
Duke also faced a ranked opponent on Sunday when they took on Maryland in College Park. The then-No. 11 Blue Devils lost 85-80 to the then-No. 18 Terrapins, causing them to drop five spots this week to No. 16. Conversely, the upset of Duke led to Maryland rising in the rankings to No. 11.
North Carolina did not face any ranked opponents in their first week and went 2-0, beating both Charleston Southern and UNCW at home. The Tar Heels moved up one place this week to No. 14.
UNC plays their next two contests in Greensboro — an away game against North Carolina A&T on Tuesday night. and a neutral site game against No. 2 UConn on Friday night. NC State hosts Kent State Thursday night then plays at TCU Sunday afternoon. Duke is also home for their first game this week, a matchup against Dayton on Thursday night. They then play at South Dakota State on Sunday afternoon.
