North Carolina State’s 34-30 loss to Wake Forest was made all the more painful by the sight of star quarterback Grayson McCall forced to leave the game and the stadium after sustaining a head injury.
The injury occurred during the first quarter of the game. As McCall tried to scramble up the middle of the field for a first down, he lowered his body, which opened him up to a big hit in the head by a member of the Wake Forest defense. McCall appeared to go into the fencing posture, signifying that he was knocked unconscious.
Fortunately, the news from the Wolfpack on McCall’s status appears to be positive. The team announced that he was just released from the hospital and is “alert and in good spirits” with all scans coming back normal.
“Some great news: quarterback Grayson McCall has been released from the hospital. He is alert and in good spirits and all scans were normal,” the team said.

McCall is in his first season with the Wolfpack after spending the first five years of his college career at Coastal Carolina. He’s had an up-and-down season in the ACC, throwing for 476 yards and three touchdowns in his first few games with the team.
But McCall has also dealt with other concussions through the years. His tenure at Coastal Carolina ended last year with a concussion he suffered against Arkansas State.
It’s yet another reminder of the dangers players face whenever they step onto the football field – college or professional.
