I’d be shocked and a little concerned if we end up seeing Grayson McCall on the football field again this season, though Dave Doeren said Monday that it’s too early in the process for a determination on his status to be made.
After a crushing hit that saw him leave the field on a stretcher, McCall was taken to the hospital on Saturday but was later released.
He’s in concussion protocol and “we’ll give him time to go through all the steps that he wants to go through before we talk anymore about what the next steps are.”
He is, “for the most part ok.”

Doeren said he’s not opposed to ruling a player out due to health risks, but he’s going to defer to the doctors, family and player first.
That’s why he’s letting McCall and his family go through protocol first.

It’s not going to be an easy decision for McCall or his family to make, especially if it involves hanging it up from football completely. Given the severity of this concussion and what he’s been through before, it’s probably safe to assume that he’s as good as done for the rest of 2024.
The season’s half over already, and there’s no reason to try and get back out there for a couple of games in November that look increasingly meaningless. I also don’t think Doeren should play him even if he were able at some point.
Anyway, all the best to Grayson as he recovers and sorts through his football future. It’s a lot to deal with.
