Grayson McCall took to Instagram on Wednesday night to announce his retirement from football. The veteran quarterback has unfortunately had to endure multiple head injuries over the course of his career, the most recent of them occurring against Wake Forest earlier this month.
As you all know I have battled injuries my whole career, but this is one that I cannot come back from. I have done everything I can to continue, but this is where the good Lord has called me to serve in a different space. Brain specialists, my family, and I have come to the conclusion that it is in my best interest to hang the cleats up.
I don’t doubt that it was a tough decision on his part, so it’s good to see that he seems to have found a measure of peace despite it. Football’s just not worth the risk to his future quality of life.
Dave Doeren has said that McCall would make a good coach one day, and that’s the path McCall now wants to take. Whether his next step is at NC State or somewhere else, I’ll be rooting for his success.
