It didn’t even occur to me that Elliott Avent might retire after this season. I mean, he’s always there; he’s a constant. I couldn’t tell you anything about NC State baseball before Avent, because I can’t remember that far back.
If there was any serious speculation about his plans, he put those to rest yesterday, telling the N&O’s Chip Alexander that he isn’t ready to head off into the sunset. Given that the ACC title eluded him again, I’d have been shocked if he didn’t want at least one more crack at it.
But I suppose we will have to confront the matter sooner than later; maybe that’s next year, maybe it’s in five years, but soon enough. Thankfully, Avent is in a position where he can decide when and how it happens, as 2024 did a lot to cement his legacy and quiet whatever critics still remain.
For now, we can get back to thinking about the next team he puts on the field.
