Oh, Dave.
It’s amusing to me that for whatever reason, Dave Doeren simply cannot resist needling the fanbase occasionally. It follows the same pattern each time: criticism one week, then complimentary words the next. This hasn’t been a big deal in the past, but this time around he did an especially poor job of reading the room.
I, for one, would not get snippy about fans standing up on third down in the days after my team just utterly blew a game—entirely a failure on his part, if it’s on anyone. But that’s me.
This was so badly timed that Boo Corrigan felt moved to write a thank you note to the fans yesterday, which gives you a good idea what his inbox must have looked like.
It’s not the best time to be antagonizing fans, what with the disappointing season that’s going on, and, oh by the way, all of that extra money the school is asking them to pony up for tickets and parking passes beginning next season.
Dave could easily do this in a more constructive manner. “We’re disappointed and we’re going to get after it in practice this week, and we need our fans to step up and help us get back on track and be the difference-makers I know they can be.” See how easy that is, Dave? No letter from the AD required.
I say all of this as a supporter of Dave’s, but the man sure can make that support difficult at times. Maybe Dave should worry about the fact that his guys have become human PEZ dispensers with the football in their hands and focus on sorting out some of the myriad other issues on the field before worrying about what’s going on in the stands, eh?
