A surprising twist in the coaching carousel came Monday with the announcement that Dave Clawson had turned in his resignation at Wake Forest.
This looks a bit out of the blue, since Wake’s season has been over for a couple of weeks now, and the program has been recruiting in the portal like business as usual—even picked up a QB commitment (who has since decommitted) before Clawson made his exit.
He should have done this a week ago so the Deacs could get in on the Bill Belichick sweepstakes.
I’m curious to see how this search shakes out given the more difficult circumstances Wake is operating under—the school seems to be keeping up on the NIL front in basketball, but football is another matter. It is a low-pressure gig where a decent coach can have an extended career, as we’ve seen with both Clawson and Jim Grobe, which helps, but I’m not sure how attractive the job looks these days.
