Butters heads to San Diego with the 360th overall pick
The San Diego Padres used the 15th pick in the 12 the round – 360th overall pick – of the 2024 MLB Draft to select NC State shortstop Brandon Butterworth, marking the third Wolfpack player selected in this year’s draft. There is no slot value for picks after the 10th round, but draft picks beyond that point can sign for up to $125k before counting against the team’s overall bonus pool. Anything over that $125k would be deducted from the team’s bonus pool.
Butterworth transferred to NC State for the 2024 season after spending his first two collegiate years at Western Carolina. With the Wolfpack, he hit .250/.369/.420, 14.7 BB%, 14.0 K%, 13-14 SB, with 13 2B and 7 HR while starting all 61 games for an NC State team that ended their season at the College World Series. Over his three year college career, Butterworth hit a combined .286/.378/.447, 11.6 BB%, 13.2 K%, 42-47 SB with 47 2B, 11 3B, and 15 HR.
The right-handed hitting Monroe native has defensive flexibility having started at 2B while at Western and with the speed and arm strength to also play outfield. That ability to serve in a utility role should help Butterworth in pro ball. Of course, Butterworth has a year of eligibility remaining and could return to Raleigh. This is where the new age of NIL money could come into play with respect to the draft.
