Two unpleasant games to watch
The Rady Children’s Invitational was a good idea, four good teams, but poorly executed on our part. We played four quarters – lost the first by 1, the second by 9, the third by 11, and tied the 4th – but that might have been because they emptied their bench once they had a 20 point lead on us.
As we all feared, once we faced a higher level of competition we were exposed as not being up to the task. Our rebounding was terrible, both teams out rebounded us by double digits. Dontrez Styles, who we are relying on to be one of our better outside shooters, was 0-7 from 3PT, and had more fouls (8) than total points (6) in the two games.
We’ve got until next Wednesday to figure this out when we get our last reasonable shot at a good OOC win against Texas. (not counting on Kansas) Hopefully home court will help.
Game Summary:
The first half started badly, BYU going 4-4 from 3PT and going up 14-5 in the first three minutes. From that point on it really got no better, the Pack shooting 29.6 FG% and BYU shooting 53.8 FG%, including shooting 6-10 (60%!) from 3PT. We did get to see Diouf in the game, unfortunately his 3 minutes were highlighted by a missed dunk. Rebounding continues to be a weakness; we were outrebounded 20-13. O’Connell led us in scoring with 10, he was the only Wolfpack player with more than one field goal. BYU 38-27 at the half.
The second half we played better but spent much of the half down nearly 20. We shot 43.3% / 50% / 75% to their 33.3% / 25% / 66.7%. They out rebounded us by 6. We ended up playing them even in the second half 34/34, but could not make up the halftime 11 point deficit. Final score, BYU 72-61.
Overall Takeaways:
- We scored 61 in both games. (Purdue 61-71, BYU 61-72)
- In the first half, no one hit more than one basket other than O’Connell (4-7/2-3)
- Down 11 at the half, lost by 11
- Out rebounded by 13, gave up 15 offensive rebounds
- Only 9 turnovers
- 10 assists on 21 made FG
- Points in the paint BYU 30, Wolfpack 20
