Class of 2026 dual-sport athlete Jacob Smith has been committed to Elliott Avent and NC State baseball since his freshman year of high school, and he also received an offer from Dave Doeren as his football recruiting picked up. Yesterday the 6’2 quarterback announced his commitment to play football at State as well.

On the baseball side, he is a well-regarded IF/RHP prospect who Perfect Game calls “immensely projectable,” with plenty of room to grow. He has excellent arm strength already and could stick at shortstop in college.
Not surprisingly, the arm strength is also translating well to football. He threw for almost 1,500 yards in 2023, with 14 touchdowns against five interceptions. He holds an offer from all four in-state ACC programs. He’s pretty projectable here as well, clearly.
The inevitable comparisons to Russell Wilson will come (though Smith is shaping up as a more prototypical quarterback), and at least this time around we won’t have to worry about a head football coach getting all huffy about him missing spring practice to play baseball.
