After two seasons at Duke, former five-star forward Mark Mitchell is reportedly entering the NCAA transfer portal.
Mitchell will go portaling, according to On3’s Joe Tipton. The 2022 McDonald’s All-American will have two seasons of eligibility at his next stop.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Duke University and all those who supported me over the past few years,” Mitchell told Tipton in a statement. “I am deeply appreciative of the impact this community has had on my life, and it will forever remain dear to my heart. Having said that, I have made the decision to enter my name into the transfer portal.”
This season, Mitchell 11.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while shooting 54% from the field. However, his inability to shoot from the outside proved to be an Achilles heel, both personally and for Duke as a whole.
After connecting on 19-of-54 three-pointers as a freshman in 2022-23, Mitchell hit on just 11-of-40 as a sophomore, often times showing a reluctance to even look at the basket from the perimeter.
Teams left the 6-foot-7 southpaw open and focused their attention on Duke’s other offensive weapons, which presented an issue for head coach Jon Scheyer.
Despite this, Mitchell did have his share of positive moments, including back-to-back 20-point games in wins over Syracuse and Notre Dame, with the latter being a 23-point, 14-rebound effort.
Mitchell also scored 20 points in a win over Louisville and 23 in a victory over Wake Forest. However, after logging 15 points and five boards in Duke’s first round NCAA Tournament victory over Vermont, he produced just 10 points and 12 rebounds total in the Blue Devils’ final three tourney games.
