Jon Scheyer is at it again in the transfer portal, this time picking up Purdue transfer small forward Mason Gillis on Monday.
Gillis — the 6-foot-6, 225-pound small forward from New Castle (IN) — averaged 6.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 21.2 minutes per game off the bench for the national runner-up Purdue last season. He’s played four seasons at Purdue with 63 starts and will bring valuable experience to the Blue Devil’s young roster.
The guard will bring shooting to Duke as well. Gillis is a career 40.7% shooter from 3-point range on 369 attempts, and with strong players in the front court, he can serve as a solid kick out option.
Next season will be Gillis’ sixth in college. He redshirted in 2019-20 at Purdue.
This is Duke’s second portal commitment in two days after losing seven players to the portal. Gillis will join former Syracuse power forward Maliq Brown as a portal newcomer on the 2024-25 roster. Both will be joining an elite No. 1-ranked Duke freshman recruiting class. This includes projected top-3 2025 NBA Draft picks Cooper Flagg and Khaman Maluach, as well as five-star small forwards Isaiah Evans and Kon Knueppel, five-star center Patrick Ngongba II and four-star small forward Darren Harris.
