If the Duke Blue Devils are going to improve to 12-2 on the season this Saturday, they’ll have to do so without head coach Jon Scheyer.
Moments ago, Duke announced that Scheyer will miss this weekend’s game due to an illness. Stepping into his role as acting head coach will be Chris Carrawell. He’s been with the Blue Devils since 2018. Prior to joining Duke’s staff, he spent a few seasons at Marquette.
The good news for Duke is that Scheyer isn’t expected to miss more than one game. Of course, that’s assuming that he makes a speedy recovery.
“Coach Scheyer did not travel with the team to Dallas due to illness and will miss today’s game,” Duke announced just 15 minutes prior to tipoff. “Associate Head Coach Chris Carrawell will serve as acting head coach. Coach Scheyer is expected to return for Tuesday’s game vs. Pitt.”
Duke is off to a great start in conference play this season, defeating Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech in back-to-back games. Freshman phenom Cooper Flagg was sensational during the school’s last game, dropping 24 points and dishing out six assists.
We’ll see if Flagg can stay hot this afternoon against SMU. The Blue Devils will be leaning heavily on him, that’s for sure.
SMU won’t be an easy opponent for Duke this afternoon. The Mustangs are averaging 87.2 points per game this season. Their leading scorer, Boopie Miller, is averaging 15.4 points per game.
Duke fans can watch this Saturday’s game on the CW Network.
