DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – The Duke men’s basketball team is set to square off against a familiar face ahead of the 2024-25 season.
Arizona State, led by former Blue Devils standout Bobby Hurley, will travel to Cameron Indoor Stadium in October for a charity exhibition game, according to a news release from Duke Athletics.
Proceeds from the “Brotherhood Run” charity game, which is scheduled for Oct. 27, will be used to benefit Duke Children’s Hospital.
“We are excited about the Brotherhood Run, playing Arizona State for a charity exhibition game. This is the first time we’ve done something like this,” Duke men’s basketball coach Jon Scheyer said in a statement. “Duke Children’s Hospital has been a great partner to our program for a long time, starting with Coach K, and to keep that relationship going means a lot to me and to our program. We couldn’t be more excited to partner with them to raise funds and awareness for all the incredible work they are doing.”
This marks a homecoming for Hurley, who broke the NCAA all-time assists record (1,076) during his time in Durham from 1989 to 1993. Over his four-year college career, he spearheaded the Blue Devils to three Final Four appearances, as well as a pair of national championships in 1991 and 1992.
For his exploits on the hardwood, Hurley earned an induction into the Duke Athletics Hall of Fame as part of the 2011 class. His retired No. 11 jersey currently hangs in the rafters at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
“I’ve always had a ton of respect and admiration for Bobby Hurley,” Scheyer said. “He’s one of the all-time great players to ever play college basketball, let alone Duke. His 1991 team was the team that won our first national championship, and his 1992 team was the team where I fell in love with Duke and fell in love with college basketball. The records, the national championships and wins speak for themselves, but to me it’s the tenacity that he played with, the incredible competitiveness and toughness, and coming through in the big-time moments. It’s an honor to play this game and celebrate Bobby at Duke. It’s also a great opportunity for both teams to compete at a high level before the season starts.”
Heading into his 10th season as the Sun Devils’ head coach, Hurley has compiled a 155-131 record and guided the program to four 20-win seasons. He’s also ushered Arizona State to three trips to the NCAA Tournament over the course of his tenure.
This is the first time the former Duke guard has returned to play against his alma mater since becoming a head coach.
“I’m grateful to Jon Scheyer and Duke Basketball for working with Arizona State Basketball to make this exhibition game a reality,” Hurley said in a statement. “It will be special for me to return to Cameron Indoor. Our team is excited for the opportunity to compete against a storied basketball program prior to embarking on our regular season schedule. The collaboration between Duke and Arizona State to put together this charity exhibition game supporting Duke Children’s Hospital is very meaningful to both programs.”
Entering next season with expectations as a preseason top-10 team, the Blue Devils bring in the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation, highlighted by No. 1 overall recruit Cooper Flagg and projected top-five 2025 NBA Draft pick Khaman Maluach.
Meanwhile, Hurley and his coaching staff hauled in a top-rated freshmen class of their own, which includes Raleigh high school basketball star and five-star big man Jayden Quaintance – the highest-ranked prospect to ever commit to the Sun Devils.
Duke and Arizona State are slated to tip off at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Oct. 27 at 6:30 p.m.
