Former NFL star turned sports media personality Shannon Sharpe went after Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney on Saturday evening.
Clemson was blown out by No. 1 Georgia, 34-3, on Saturday afternoon. Swinney has been taking a lot of heat on social media for his stubbornness with the NCAA’s transfer portal, as the Tigers have refused to adapt to the new era of college football.
Sharpe was among those ripping Swinney for his coaching performance.

âCheck this out, heâs gonna have to come to the conclusion, the realization; heâs gonna have to have an epiphany, which is a realization that if you donât get the transfer portal, you ainât winning,â said Sharpe on his Night Cap show with Chad Johnson. ââŚClemson is one of four teams, Navy, Army, Air Force â they donât accept transfers at the service academies â that didnât land a transfer. Hey, Dabo, you said when they started paying players, you were gonna exit stage left.
âI remember, hey, you know another guy? Coach K said, âI donât do that. One and dones? No, that ainât me.â Right? Until he started doing one and dones. If you canât beat âem, join âem. Dabo, get with the program. Youâre not that good. Youâre not that good, buddy. Youâre not that good. If you think youâre just gonna get high school seniors, and thatâs what you gonna win with? Bro, itâs over. It is over. Everybody else is doing it. Look at the top-10 teams.
âI was reading a thing, I think it was The New York Times, where itâs telling you what it costs to get a top nine. Youâre paying $700,000-$800,000 for a quarterback. Youâre paying $400,000-$500,000 for a receiver. Youâre paying $400,000-$500,000 for a defensive lineman. Canât beat âem, join âem.â
If Clemson is going to get back to its status among the college football elites, Swinney is going to have to adapt.
But he’s shown little to no interest in doing that.
