Clemson’s days of being a powerhouse in college football appear to be over. Dabo Swinney’s squad is 4-4 heading into a showdown with Notre Dame this Saturday.
During this morning’s edition of “College GameDay,” ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit addressed the current issues plaguing Clemson’s program.
While everyone loves to blame the quarterback and coaching staff, Herbstreit believes the real issue for Clemson is its inability to recruit elite talent at wide receiver.
“Let’s be real. This has not been the same Clemson team since they walked off that field during COVID against Ohio State in the Superdome. It just hasn’t,” Herbstreit said. “You can blame it on the offensive system, you can say it was D.J. Uiagalelei’s fault. Now you’re going to blame it on Cade [Klubnik]. One common thing I see is I don’t see the receivers they had four years ago, five years ago, six years ago. I’m not even talking about guys like Mike Williams. I’m talking about really good players like Artavis Scott. They’ve had big recruits, but they haven’t hit there in recruiting.”

Beaux Collins is the leading receiver for Clemson this season with 408 yards and two touchdowns. Tyler Brown, meanwhile, has 397 receiving yards in eight games.
We’ll see if Clemson’s receiving corps can break out this Saturday and prove their worth.
An upset win over Notre Dame would certainly help quiet all the negative noise surrounding Clemson’s future.
