Several years ago, Clemson’s Dabo Swinney was considered the perfect successor for Nick Saban at Alabama. That’s no longer the case.
On Thursday morning, former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy offered his thoughts on some potential targets for the head coaching job. He made it abundantly clear that he doesn’t believe Swinney will take over for Saban.
“Zero-percent chance,” McElroy said when asked about Swinney’s odds.

McElroy isn’t being harsh, he’s just being realistic. Over the past 24 hours, several insiders have listed candidates for the Alabama job. Swinney doesn’t seem to be one of them.
In fact, Joel Klatt of Fox Sports claims Swinney isn’t even a top-three option for the Crimson Tide.
“My belief was that this needed to work very quickly. I was told this was going to happen within 72 hours regardless of name. They wanted to move quickly so they can solidify this locker room,” Klatt said. “For me, the list was three names. You start with Sark. It’s immediate, you know him, you can offer him the job. If he says, ‘No,’ which I assume that he has, you move to Dan Lanning. Dan Lanning has now said, ‘No.’ The third name on that list is Kalen DeBoer.”
Unless something changes drastically in the next few days, Swinney will remain the head coach of Clemson’s football program.
