It’s been emotional weekend for the Clemson Tigers family after learning of the loss of former player Diondre Overton.
Overton, a two-time national champion and 2019 team captain, reportedly passed away at just 26-years-old after being the victim of a shooting in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Head coach Dabo Swinney was extremely emotional as he walked into Memorial Stadium on Saturday, kneeling down and kissing Overton’s plaque outside of the venue as he wiped away tears.
After the game, Dabo opened up about how Overton’s death affected him leading up to kickoff.
“First of all, it’s been a long day with the news this morning on Diondre Overton,” Swinney said. “Took the wind out of my body this morning. Had an opportunity to speak with his dad — obviously, they’re hurting. It’s hard to process something like this. It’s so senseless. Just a beautiful, young life cut short at 26.”
Overton played 51 games under Dabo and helped the program reach CFB’s mountaintop.
After college, his professional career included stops in the CFL, European League of Football and most recently the UFL as a member of the Memphis Showboats.
“The United Football League and the Memphis Showboats are heartbroken and mourn the tragic loss of Diondre Overton,” the league said in a statement. “Our hearts and prayers go out to Diondre’s family, friends and teammates. We send our sincere condolences during this difficult time.”
