Clemson lost its season opener in resounding fashion Saturday, falling 34-3 to No. 1 Georgia in Atlanta.
The 14th-ranked Tigers actually played well defensively for a large portion of the game, holding the Bulldogs to only six first half points. However, Clemson’s offense was downright offensive.
Dabo Swinney’s squad managed only 188 yards of total offense, and quarterback Cade Klubnik looked uncomfortable all afternoon. In its last two matchups with Georgia, today and the 2021 season opener, the Tigers scored only six combined points.
Legendary former Clemson wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins expressed his disappointment with his alma mater on X/Twitter.
“Clemson has all these playmakers but only 3 points. Something has to change,” Hopkins tweeted.
Clemson’s offense has been a point of contention over the last several seasons. Swinney has changed coordinators and quarterbacks, but things haven’t improved much.
From 2015-20, Clemson lost only seven games in six seasons, played for the national championship four times and won it twice. The Tigers were right there with Alabama as the premier program in college football.
In the last three seasons, Clemson lost 10 games and in 2023, failed to win 10 games in a season for the first time since 2010. Swinney’s reluctance to use the transfer portal has earned him even more ridicule from fans and media.
We’ll see if they can rebound and turn things around this season, starting with next week against Appalachian State.
